Started by Mama Socorro and Jaime Herrera in a converted 10 x 10 outdoor shoe shine station, Yucas aka the Hut, became known for its Yucatan-style cooking and community involvement. Over the years not much has changed there is a second location with a few more menu items out of Yucas Pasadena (it IS 5x bigger) however the same beloved recipes and dishes are still served. Yucas obtained its first customers in a quite unordinary fashion. Jaime Jr. flagged cars from the sidewalk in front of the Hut and offered a deal that couldnt be resisted, Try it and love it or, well give you double your money back! Not only did we not have to return anyones money, they helped us spread the word Guerilla Marketing at its finest, before the term was even coined! Shortly thereafter, Yucas received its first write-up by the Los Angeles Times Food Critic and it proved to be the start of an amazing food adventure over the past 4 decades. Yucas has been fortunate to receive great press from various publications and media outlets in the U.S. and around the world. Receiving the James Beard Award in the American Classics category in 2005 was truly the icing on the Herrera family dream.
