Sloopys has always has been about family. Since the early 1940s, when the McArdle family owned a house on Highland Ave with a fairly large patio. In 1953, an application was made to the city of Manhattan Beach for $500 (a lot of money at the time) to turn the patio into a dining area and the house into an outdoor kitchen. Hence, the Beach Hamburger Stand was born. In 1967, the second owners of the patio, Nicole and Guy, renamed the patio to Sloopys Beach Café when Guy noticed his wife rockin to the song Hang on Sloopy on the radio. Nicole, Guy, and family operated Sloopys until 1989 when Helen and Peter purchased the business. Through the years, this popular Manhattan Beach location has only had three owners who have maintained the patio theme from its original inception. As Helen and Peter embark on their 20th anniversary of ownership, Sloopys has been dedicated to serving the customers the best quality of food at the most reasonable prices. Majority of the item that were on the original menu (e.g. Mushroom Cheddar Burger) still remain on the menu today. Come and visit this unique patio restaurant where 30 year old plants still thrive today.
