Fresh from a hard-fought victory in the First World War, the VFW built its officers club at 751 Saluda Avenue in Columbia SC. Here, old comrades would gather to remember past glories and to celebrate new achievements. But times changed and, seven decades later, theonce grand hall sat empty and condemned. After a painstaking six-year renovation, the building reopened in 1996 as Saludas Restaurant, replete with white linen, crystal glassware and an executive chef. Its magnificent Victorian centerpiece, a solid mahogany bar rescued from Philadelphias Blakely Hotel, now graces Saludas dining room.
