Java Grounds

Java Grounds is unique among coffee houses in that it is a not-for-profit organization. But thats only the beginning of our story! The fact is that we are much more than a coffee house. While, most assuredly, we are here to serve you, the fundamental reason we arehere is to serve a greater purpose. Java Grounds is owned and operated by Heart for the City, a mentoring ministry to inner-city kids. Heart for the City works tirelessly to develop a program that assists us to raise up a new generation that challenges the physical, psychological, intellectual, social and emotional walls that trap at risk inner-city youth. We do this by working with the WHOLE kid. Not just on the athletic field, but through our Community Garden, where the kids learn to be responsible for a fragile plant until it completes its stages of growth; and through our After-School Program, which provides a safe, educational environment for children to go. That is where Java Grounds comes in, our Workforce Development program, where we teach these kids the skills necessary to provide for themselves. At Java grounds we provide real-life, on the job training. We teach them about every aspect of the business from customer service to handling money. We are continually developing new exercises to teach them how to interact with adults in a proper, business-like manner and with polite, friendly, and intelligent conversation.
