We use several methods to achieve results: we work with child welfare agencies to achieve large scale change; we champion legislation in California to help children in foster care; and we actively utilize the media to make childrens needs a public priority. We also provide training and support to other child advocates nationwide. Much of NCYLs work is in California, and the Bay Area. Last year, we secured an agreement with the State of California to reshape and improve the way mental health services are provided to foster children (and those at risk of entering foster care). The goal is to reduce the use of large institutions, increase the likelihood that foster children with mental health problems have permanent homes, and improve these childrens overall success in life. Also, since 2006, NCYL has worked with the San Francisco Chronicle on an editorial campaign to improve foster care. That campaign has led to more than 100 editorials and more than 25 new child welfare reform bills. It also resulted in about $100 million in additional state support for foster care. For more than 40 years, NCYL has successfully advocated for children whose needs are often ignored by our society. We provide them with a voice in the decisions that so dramatically affect their lives.
