Cafe Capriccio was established in 1982 by Jim Rua in an historic brownstone on Grand Street, the center of Albanys once-thriving Italian neighborhood. Soon after its debut, Vinod Chhabra, food critic for the Albany Times Union, rated Cafe Capriccio top on the listof the best restaurants saying this cozy little basement operation…is probably the most interesting restaurant in Albany today. Capriccio continues to maintain its unique reputation and is chosen year after year by Capital-area media as Albanys Best Italian Restaurant. Food writer Byron Nilsson recently captured the Cafes purpose and commitment when he titled his review: Timeless Excellence. With its intimate booth seating, warm maple paneling and 1930s Italian décor, the Café continues to be one of the most romantic dining destinations in the Capital District. The Cafes evolving menu enhances its reputation as the areas most authentic Italian dining experience by exploring all areas of Italian cuisine past and present. Chef and proprietor since the Cafes inception, Jim Rua, one of the Capital regions most noteworthy culinary forces, is dedicated to preserving and maintaining the great traditions of Italian cuisine and hospitality. Author of two popular cookbooks, Jim continues to explore old and new culinary resources through his frequent travels and experiences in Italy which are reflected in all aspects of Cafe Capriccios menu and ambiance.
