Benos was originally opened in 1984 as a franchise of the original Benos Deli in Lake City, MN. Ron and Joan Shebeno developed most of our sandwiches, and ran their deli for a number of years, also opening one in Red Wing, MN. After a time they closed both locations, and they went on to own the Cickedee Cottage in Lake City. They stop in now and again, to have a combo and visit. Rons nickname was Beno, hence the name! Benos in Winona was originally opened by Darlene Russell, a friend of Ron and Joans from Lake City. Penny Kropidlowski worked for Dar from day one, and then bought the store from her in 1988. Today the deli is in a new location. In 2001 there was a fire in the building where we rented space. We decided to buy a building of our own. We bought the old city hall building. It is a great fit for the deli, we have more seating and a small meeting room available for customers to use. The building also houses a gift shop called Magnolias, and some great apartments. We are very happy in our new location. Come in and check us out!
