The Opera House Block building, Golden Colorado When gold was found in the Colorado Territory during the 1850s, prospectors known as the Fifty-Niners flocked to the Rocky Mountains. Small towns cropped up to provide them mercantile services, and created gold boomtowns. Because of its location, Golden arose as a last-stop shop before entry into the rugged Rockies. It served the Fifty-Niners as an outpost, and grew into the community that is beloved by so many today. Situated on historic Washington Ave, Ace Hi Tavern occupies a piece of this Golden history. The Opera House Block building was erected in 1879 and served as a public meeting house, theater spaceand at one time, a brothel. In 1961, Leo Stillman purchased the building and founded Ace Hi Tavern in the former Opera House restaurant. It was then passed down to Sid Stillman, and is owned today by Leos grandson Mike making him the third generation to proudly own and operate the local favorite. The Opera House Block is one of Colorados oldest entertainment landmarks, and were proud to call it the home of the Ace Hi Tavern. Against the backdrop of the Rockies, Goldens main street is lined with building facades dating back to the 1800s. Washington Avenue gives a glimpse into Goldens past, and preserves the historic charm that draws visitors today. At the heart of Washington Ave and old town Golden is the Opera House Block. This four-storefront building is the grandest structure in Golden, and remains iconic for both its history and its present. Since 1879, the Opera House Block has been a social hub, and since 1961 it has been in the Ace Hi family. With a nod to its past, its taken on second life as home to the Ace Hi Tavern, and has become a favorite among locals and tourists alike.
